NORITAKE ITRON’S LATEST VF DISPLAYS
LCD-Compatible 5 x 7 Character Displays Evolution
Popular VFD character displays with 2x16, 2x20 and 4x20 formats have been developed which incorporate the driver, controller and font set inside the VFD glass using a new ASIC with 44780 LCD controller compatibility. This enables a compact, wide environmental solution with the capability of humidity extremes. A clock serial interface is provided for host communication with a 2-byte command and data format matching the control and data registers in the parallel interface implementation of a 44780 LCD controller. This allows users to easily convert existing software with changes to a few lines of code diverting data from the parallel to serial port. The VFD glass requires 5VDC and 36VDC external supply. Modular versions are available with a single 5VDC input. Full product release is due in April 2007.
Users of LCD character modules can upgrade to the 7806A Series of graphic modules which have the same footprint and command set as existing LCD modules with enhanced graphic features embedded into unused command areas. The 7806A version has true 4 or 8 bit bi-directional interfaces with i80 or M68 control line selection. The enhanced graphics features include multi-sized 5x5, 5x7 and 10x14 fonts, pixel resolution cursor positioning, graphic draw and bit-image upload to show user-defined icons and images. Product release is February 2007.
Two-Colour Grey Scale VFD for Consumer Applications
The advent of an 80V CIG driver with 16-level grey scale capability has enabled a visually striking display to be created at a relatively low cost. The pixel format consists of 2 trapezoidal phosphor areas in blue and red for 256 colour combinations. The 4MHz interface and fast response time allows impressive video images for enhanced consumer application in video recording, channel selection and monitoring. The illumination has been improved by reducing the inter-dot gap to 0.085mm from the standard 0.2mm over the past 3 years.
The first product to enter the market is a custom application with 128 x 30 pixel format. It is planned to introduce 128 x 32 and 128 x 64 standard products by Q4 2007.
Noritake Itron are able to offer technical advice and design-in facilities to address a wide selection of applications.
